Wall decoration | The Greek Mermaid
An exclusive detailed painting, made of clay. A must have piece of art for all those who love Greece and its’ mythology. Meet Thessaloniki, the Greek Mermaid!
There is a popular Greek legend about a mermaid who roamed the Aegean Sea for hundreds of years. Her name? Thessaloniki.
Legend has it that when Alexander the Great died his grief-stricken sister attempted to end her life by jumping into the sea. Instead of drowning she became a vengeance-seeking mermaid. She passed judgment on countless mariners throughout the centuries, across the seven seas. To the sailors who came across her she would always pose the same question: “Is Alexander the king alive?”. The correct answer would be, “He lives and reigns and conquers the world.” If she was given the right answer, she would allow the ship and its crew to pass safely in calm seas. Any other answer would transform her into a fierce Gorgon-like creature, causing storms and wrecking the ship and drowning the sailors on it, sending them all to a dark and bottomless grave.
But why pick Thessaloniki and create an art piece dedicated to her?
Thessaloniki may have been turned into a mermaid, but she was above all a woman with all the attributes that a woman has, those of love and compassion. She would always be loyal to her brother and would punish all treason against him. Of course, this is just a part of Greek mythology, and we obviously do not support acts of revenge in life, but this woman always reminds us of what faith and perseverance means.
